Dear Midwife

Licensed Midwife

I am a direct entry midwife who became licensed in 1997; having been directly involved in midwifery since 1986 (and indirectly since 1972 when my first child was born at home), the beginning of my apprenticeship.  In 1996 I completed Seattle Midwifery School’s Challenge Process, and the NARM exam (supervised by the California Medical Board) qualifying me as a Licensed Midwife in the state of California.During my 5 year apprenticeship I studied many subjects, including herbology, homeopathy, acupuncture, alternative health care and nutrition, while working with many qualified midwives and doctors, including lay midwives, an OB, a CNM, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, chiropractors, kinesiologists and holistic practitioners.  My studies also included 3 years of standard college courses and numerous seminars.

My training in midwifery has been a long process, mostly achieved through self study and apprenticeship.

I continue to stay updated on new procedures in childbirth and other mother/baby topics.  I have appeared on several southern California radio and cable television programs, including a story on the Odyssey Channel, in a program entitled, “The Spirituality of Childbirth,” which featured a midwife assisted home birth.

I have also done an appearance on the popular TLC show, “A Baby Story,” as the midwife managing a water birth.   My midwifery work was also captured in Mothers and Daughters, a book of photographs released for Mother’s Day, 1997.

I’ve written numerous articles, many of which are listed on my website www.dear-midwife.com and co authored an e book with with writer Abbi Perets, “Homebirth: Making It Happen,” covering various topics I’ve encountered over the years as a midwife, such as Who Cuts the Cord, Vaccinations, Circumcision, Post Partum Care, Types of Midwives, Pregnancy Health, Registering Your Baby’s Birth, Coping with Labor, Breastfeeding and Newborn Care.

My philosophy as an experienced midwife is one of non-interference and informed choice with the natural process of birth, feeling that I work with the mother and father as a team member.
